The Problem We Solved
Before: The same anchor text appeared on multiple source pages, each pointing to a different destination. Google had to guess which page was the “right” one to rank — and usually split the ranking signal between them.
After: For phrases where one page is clearly the right answer, all anchors now point to that single canonical page. For phrases where the existing links were weak or duplicated other pages entirely, those links were removed so the page can rank on its own merits with cleaner signal.

How We Did It
- Detect — crawled every internal link in the site and grouped anchors by exact text. Found 251 phrase groups that link to 2+ different destinations across 2,864 link instances.
- Score — for each group, compared every destination against the anchor text using slug + title matching. Tagged each link as a canonical match, a weak match, a wrong target, or identical intent.
- Apply — for groups with one clear canonical, kept that one link and removed the rest. For groups where no link was a clean match, removed all links so the page can rank without competing anchors.
How This Helps the Site
Clearer ranking signals. Google no longer has to guess which page “wins” for each phrase.
Stronger pillar pages. The chosen canonicals now collect all the link equity that was previously split.
No weak anchor mismatches. Removed the cases where the anchor promised one thing but the destination talked about another.

What May Change Along the Way
- Search Console clicks may shift as Google re-evaluates which page ranks for each phrase — usually a short-term wobble.
- Internal link equity consolidates into the chosen canonicals over the next 4–6 weeks.
- Some pages may see a small drop in link counts because competing anchors were removed — this is intentional and temporary.
- We may discover new cannibalization as new content is published, which we will continue to monitor and resolve.
